Postdoctoral Researcher

I am a medicinal chemist working in antimicrobial drug discovery. My research focuses on understanding bacterial pathogens and identifying weaknesses that can be exploited to develop new treatments. My work brings together microbiology, chemical biology, and medicinal chemistry, to develop molecules that target essential biological processes in pathogenic bacteria. By investigating the mechanisms that allow bacteria to survive and adapt, I hope to contribute both to our understanding of infectious diseases and to the development of new approaches to tackle antimicrobial resistance.

Tuberculosis Metabolism

The major focus of my research explores the metabolism of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of tuberculosis. The remarkable success of this pathogen lies in its ability to persist within the human host for extended periods, often in nutrient-limited and hostile environments. I am particularly interested in the metabolic pathways that enable M. tuberculosis to utilise host-derived carbon sources and sustain long-term survival during infection. Using a combination of biophysical, biochemical, medicinal chemistry, and X-ray crystallographic approaches, I seek to understand the molecular mechanisms underpinning these pathways and to develop novel inhibitors that can disrupt essential metabolic functions. By targeting metabolic adaptations that are critical for persistence, I hope to establish new opportunities for therapeutic intervention against tuberculosis.

Bacterial Immune Systems

I am also interested in immune systems in pathogenic bacteria and how these systems influence bacterial survival and adaptation. Bacteria possess a wide range of defence mechanisms that protect them from bacteriophages and other biological threats. I am particularly interested in toxin–antitoxin systems, including how they are activated and regulated, and the roles they play in stress responses, persistence, genome stability, and host–pathogen interactions. More broadly, I am interested in whether bacterial immune systems can be exploited for therapeutic benefit, including the potential of toxin–antitoxin pathways as new antimicrobial targets.

 

Outside of research, I have longstanding interests in wine and choral singing. I am also actively involved in rowing, serving as an umpire nationally, and for the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race, and contributing to the organisation and delivery of rowing events in the UK and abroad.
