From Monday September 9th to Thursday September 19th the Centre for Medicines Discovery (CMD), University of Oxford, welcomed 20 students from Kind Abdulaziz University for an immersive 2-week course of seminars and workshops. The content of the course covered a wide range of topics related to the work of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Precision Medicine (CAIPM), which is a collaborative research Centre co-founded by the University of Oxford and King Abdulaziz University.
This programme provided students with a comprehensive insight into Drug Discovery, emphasizing AI advancements. Leveraging world-class expertise from CMD, Oxford, and industry, the curriculum covered early-stage drug discovery, Neural Network applications, and pharmaceutical development through seminars and hands-on workshops, including Python coding and real-world drug discovery scenarios. Students conducted a research project evaluating a human gene as a potential drug target, guided by CAIPM scientists. To ensure consistent quality, many speakers from the 2022 programme returned. The experience culminated in a celebration dinner at Trinity College on 19th September, marking a successful collaboration within the KAU & OU partnership.
Students received teaching in various venues across the University of Oxford’s city-centre science area and the new Old Road Campus, where the Oxford contingent of the CAIPM conducts its research. They toured Oxford’s state-of-the-art laboratories and met scientists working in these cutting-edge facilities. Students also received guidance on applying to the University of Oxford for doctorate study and had the opportunity to meet DPhil students who previously studied at KAU and are now members of the CAIPM in Oxford. They had access to the iconic Bodleian Libraries, using them as study spaces for their research assignments. Conveniently located near their accommodation at New College, the Old Bodleian, Radcliffe Camera, and Vere Harmsworth libraries provided ideal study environments. Students were paired and assigned a target to assess its tractability as a potential drug target, culminating in presentations to a scientific panel. Awards for the best projects were announced at the Celebration Ceremony.
